Thai Boxing/ Muay Thai

You probably heard of Thai boxing, but have you thought of doing it yourself?
What is Muay-thaï ?
Muay means Boxe, so Muay-thaï literally means Thai Boxe.
Muay-thaï is the national sport of Thailand. It is a physical and mental discipline. The Muay Thai we know dates back to the 18th century with the wars between the Burmese and Siam (Thailand). It was developed as a form of close-combat that utilizes the entire body as a weapon. It is known as the “art of eight limbs” due to using the shins, knees, fists, and elbows (eight points of contact).
So how about trying Muay Thaï in Chiang Mai ?
We tried a school where we learnt the basics of Muay-thaï and practiced a few movements. We were very happy with the family-sized team. Most people come to this school at an intermediate level but they are happy to accept beginners too. Many of the instructors have a level of renown in Thailand for all the matches they won. This class was more than just fighting, it was fun!
You can ask for 1 day, 1 week or even 1 month training. We met fellow boxers who have been training in this gym for months, some even years.
What about watching a match?
There are three stadiums where you can sit down with a cold beer to watch a match. Each stadium offers a different scale and styling, some definitely catering more to providing an entertaining night for foreigners. Fights differ drastically depending on body weight, age and nationality.
As you enter the venue, the room fills you with the feeling of adrenaline. The hyped up crowd cries out screams of support and rage. Totally overstimulated, you get to watch the national sport of Thailand.
